On May 21, 2018 Independent Jewish Voices Vancouver held “Yizkor for Gaza” in front of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver.
Yizkor (Hebrew, literally “remember”) is a traditional mourning service recited by those who have lost a parent or a close loved one. This is based on the Jewish belief in the eternity of the soul and that although a soul can no longer do good deeds after death, it can gain merit through the charity and good deeds of the living.
Here is the statement issued by Independent Jewish Voices Vancouver on the event:
On the second day of Shavu’ot, Monday, May 21, our Jewish tradition provides an opportunity to join together in mourning all those who have died. This year, Independent Jewish Voices Vancouver is gathering for a yizkor memorial service to mourn and honour the 131 people in the Gaza Strip shot dead in recent weeks by Israeli snipers.
We will also publicly denounce the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs for its continual dishonest manipulation of Canadian political leaders and media sources to silence and minimize Israel’s brutality toward Palestinians and, in this case, shift the blame for the killings to the very people who were killed. We will make it clear that CIJA does not represent Canadian Jewry and that political leaders and media sources in Canada need to understand that.
We invite all who share these intentions to gather at noon on the sidewalk at the site of CIJA’s local offices, the Jewish Community Centre of Vancouver at 950 West 41 Avenue. We plan to light a yizkor candle and to recite the names of the dead followed by the traditional Kaddish prayer. The service is expected to end by 12:30.
For more information, contact after 9:00 a.m.: Rabbi David Mivasair (604) 781-7839 dmivasair@ijvcanada.org
We acknowledge that our Yizkor service will take place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded Indigenous territories of the Coastal Salish people.
The Toronto Star reported:
Also attending the vigil was celebrated Vancouver physician and drug reform advocate Dr. Gabor Maté, who joined in reading aloud 131 names of Gazans killed recently, as well as Stephen Aberle, also a member of Independent Jewish Voices Canada.

Yizkor for Gaza — Jews of conscience in Vancouver gather on the second day of Shavu’ot to mourn the killing of 131 people in Gaza by Israeli snipers and to denounce the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Canada’s leading Zionist lobby, for its complicity.
Here are excerpts from David Mivasair’s speech and prayer at “Yizkor for Gaza” event:
We gathered here today in mourning, grief, sadness. I speak for myself and I know a lot of other Jewish people, also with a lot of anger and fury. And what the country that purports to be the country of the Jewish people is doing? And the reason we’re here, in this very spot, is because here, in this building [Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver] are organizations that totally supportive, they supported financially with millions of dollars, they supported materially by sending our children and adults there to actually dig in and support it, they supported politically by pressuring and manipulating our governments and also manipulating the media that supposed to be telling people the truth about things.
So we’ve come here today to stand in front of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver and many of us are Jews of Greater Vancouver who have come here many many times, brought their children here, went to classes here, met friends here, enjoy eating in the cafeteria, swimming in the pool, you know. We are part of the Jewish community and it’s so clear to us that the organizations that purport to represent and speak for the Jewish community are missing it, they are getting it wrong, they are not speaking for us, they are not speaking for many many other Canadian Jews, I think the majority.
Today I want to start with what I said first, the sadness, mourning and grief. We’re here today on a day that happens to be the Jewish holy day of Shavuot. In Shavuot in our tradition God revealed Torah directly to the people of Israel and I’d say mythical ancient times. The Torah has basic instructions for living, things like Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not envy the house of my neighbor. If you go deeper and deeper into the Torah, I’m just talking about the Book of Leviticus, it says things like Thou shalt not move the landmark of your neighbor from his field…
We need to mourn and grieve for 131 of our brothers and sisters who were born in Gaza, who have been killed, murdered in the last few weeks intentionally by Israeli army snipers. Everyone knows this. It’s in every media…Among those names there are children, there were amputees in wheelchairs, there were clearly identified medical people, we know that. There were media people with their cameras and notebooks, and dozens and dozens of other people who just came to say they want to go back home.
For anyone that doesn’t know I just I feel like I need to say that something like 80 percent of the population in the Gaza Strip just close to 2 million people are people who [sic] homes were within walking distance of that fence [border line between the Gaza Strip and Israel]… Their families lived there for centuries. They had houses. Some of them had fields, some had orchards. In 1948 they were intentionally driven out of their homes, some of them ended up in the Gaza Strip. They had children and grandchildren. That’s what we are talking about. When they go to the place with these fences [border line between the Gaza Strip and Israel] and they say right of return, we want to go home, it’s not hyperbole or metaphor, it’s very specifically true. So these 131 people whose names entirely justified to demand that. I pray to God that one day they will get what they deserve and it will come true. And besides praying ןt’s up to us to do what we can to help them and support them…
Our Canadian government is completely complicit in maintaining this very unjust structure the way it is. So as Canadians hopefully we can bring about some change. I think we’re in a moment where more and more people are realizing what’s going on, you know, just the horrible things Israel has being doing are in the news, no one can miss it. Many Jewish people are expressing their anguish to me. They want to do something. So there’s a moment when we can do something. Just recently 19 members of the parliament of Canada went on a very eye-opening tour to Palestine. I think they may be ready to act within the government. People need to to begin to respond…
Let me just get the names… it’s a long list. I’d like to pass it around… In memory and in honor of these people Muhammad Na’im Abu Amr, 27 years old, died on March 30th [Hamas/ Al-Qassam Brigades]. Amin Mansour [sic, Mahmoud] Abu Mu’amar, 22 years old, died on March 30th [Hamas]. And I don’t want to say died, I think I need to say killed. Ahmad ‘Abdallah al-‘Adini, murdered, 30 [Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – PFLP]… [David Mivasair continued reading] Musa Jaber ‘Abd a-Salam Abu Hasanein, 35 [Operative in the security forces of Hamas’ ministry of the interior. Paramedic]. He was the medic who was helping Tarek Lubani, saved Tarek Lubani and one hour later he was shot right in the chest and Tarek says there was a completely calm time. They were just standing there, not involved with the protesters. It was completely clear sight, no tires burning. Just some people standing there the way we’re standing here and somebody targeted him and shot him. Every single one of these people is a person and had a whole full life… I’m just going to say what it is and then later pray it, but it starts off with the words
May God’s name, which is god’s presence, it’s the way we know God, it’s our experience of the big picture of life in this world. May that be
יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ
may be sanctified and magnified. May it become so clear and so immediately experienced as holy and great. And then the language says in this world, not in some other world, in this world that we are living in, that our feet are standing on, this earth. We’re breathing this air…
[David Mivasair recites the Kaddish]

[The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs – CIJA is] supported by charitable donations given to the Jewish Federation which is the same organization that supports the Jewish schools down the street and it supports the Jewish old age home on that corner over there the Louis Brier Home and Hospital. The Jewish Federation does a lot of very good things. It supports family counselors, support, you know, food bank for Jews in poverty. [It] does many good things, but it also raises millions of dollars to support CIJA [Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs] and CIJA uses its resources to really distort and manipulate our government in Canada. I copied their statement from earlier this week. Their reaction to Justin Trudeau’s like mild mild statements suggesting that there should be an investigation. I don’t even know what there is to investigate, but Justin Trudeau had the temerity to say that after a Canadian doctor was shot. While he was just standing there he was shot, right. The previous five weeks of Palestinians being killed wasn’t anything for Justin Trudeau to speak out about. A Canadian doctor got shot and Trudeau wouldn’t have said anything if it wasn’t for people like us, I’m saying all of us saying prime minister it’s time, you know, come on Canada needs to step up. So after finally he did that, my phone is here I can’t read it to you. Go home, look up It’s CIJA.ca look for the statement that they issued, completely blaming the Palestinians themselves are getting themselves killed as some kind of a PR [public relations] trick, you know, that they’ll get sympathy if people see dead Palestinians bodies. It’s all a trick and Justin Trudeau himself is like victimized by Hamas, you know, like he doesn’t really know what it’s doing. CIJA does not speak for Canadian Jewry… Judaism is being occupied by Zionists. It’s being taken away from us… I just want to tell also about our organization, I know there are some journalists here. We’re an organization called Independent Jewish Voices [IJV Canada] is ten years old this year. We have groups chapters all across Canada. We’re small, you know, I think we represent far more people than have ever joined us, you know… CIJA launched a campaign, slick, really good, online asking CIJA supporters to write to Justin Trudeau and every member of parliament and the national coordinator of IJV has said, members of parliament have gotten like five thousand letters, ten thousand, I’m saying letters, I mean emails, right. So what are they going to do?…
