On March 7, 2026, Steven Del Duca, the Mayor of Vaughan, issued the following statement:

“I am both disgusted and angered to learn that the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto synagogue in our community has been hit with gunfire overnight.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but I know this hateful and anti-semitic act will affect my Jewish residents deeply.

Too much inaction and repeated weak responses from too many leaders have permitted this behaviour to become normalized. I have no doubt that many will take to social media to denounce what’s occurred, and then leave it at that. But words stopped being enough long ago.

Here in Vaughan, we have done everything possible as a municipality to protect our Jewish community in partnership with York Regional Police. We need other levels of government to move beyond words and to take specific concrete action that will make it clear that anti-semitism and Jew hatred will not be tolerated and that those engaging in these despicable acts will be dealt with using every available means.

To the Jewish community in Vaughan, please know how sorry I am that you continue to be targeted in such an unfair and unacceptable way. As your Mayor, I will continue to do everything possible to protect and defend you.

I have been in contact with YRP this morning and they have assured me that there will be an increased police presence around our synagogues today and in the coming days. In addition, the YRP mobile command post will be stationed at Promenade shopping mall.”
