On March 5, 2026, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), “Canada’s largest Muslim advocacy and lobby organization,” issued the following statement:
We’ve spent this week as our community members are forced to witness war led by [Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu (someone Canada would arrest as a war criminal) and [U.S. President Donald] Trump (who wants to annex Canada) in contravention of international law against Iran.
It pains us to say that Canada has continued to flip flop on its position. One day, we support the war. The next, Canada takes the position that the war is illegal. Then, that we may get involved in the war under certain scenarios. Then that we will not.
We are greatly disappointed in what we view as an incoherent position. We encourage Prime Minister [Mark] Carney to speak loudly with principle, in the same way that other nations like Spain have, that we will not participate in violating international law, will not further destabilize the region, and will not support leaders like Trump and Netanyahu as they continue to wage this war.
In other words, Canada must take a similar position as we took on the Iraq war – one of clear principle.
