Statistics from the Montreal Police Hate Crimes Unit provided to the Montreal Gazette show there were 61 crimes motivated or suspected to have been motivated by hate reported to police from January through April of this year. Of those, 21 were directed at ethnic groups and 26 were spurred by religion. Of the religion-based crimes, 15 were against Muslims, accounting for 58 per cent, and seven against Jews, accounting for 27 per cent. Another 35 non-criminal “incidents” were reported to the police during the same period, most based on religion.

In 2018, it was members and institutions of the Jewish faith that were the most often targeted in Montreal, accounting for 52 per cent of religion-based reports. Hate crimes targeting Muslims represented 44 per cent of all religion-based crimes that year… In 2018, there were 226 hate crimes reported, most based on religion.
